Ever wonder why some websites just seem to get more traction, or why some brands get much more attention than their competitors in the online world?

There can be all sorts of reasons, but one of the critical things that great brands do is to use power words in their marketing copy.

What are power words for SEO?

Power words are those particular words that trigger an emotional response, whether it be positive or negative. They stir something in us as humans and compel us to click on ads, share blog posts, and buy things we don’t really need.

These evocative words work by stimulating an immediate emotional response and triggering our curiosity. Curiosity is hard-wired deep within our monkey brain, making it difficult to resist – particularly when we’re not paying full attention and just scrolling through our news feed.

Power words are designed to short-cut the rational response to an ad, article or post and hit home immediately by targeting our emotional side. But this doesn’t necessarily mean power words are only for ‘light and fluffy’ emotions either: words that evoke money, fame, danger or freebies are particularly attractive.

How many power words should I use in a blog headline?

With great power comes great responsibility… so don’t overdo it.

Balancing descriptive and rational words with one or two well-placed power words, plus including your keywords in a blog title, will already see you creating headlines that are a good length

Stuffing in too many power words will end up looking over the top, creating a headline that is too long and detracts from the curiosity that you’re working hard to invoke.

Here are a few other places you can use power words for copywriting to get better results:

  • Email subject lines
  • Buttons
  • Product names
  • Headlines and subheadings
  • Social posts
  • Testimonials
  • Landing pages
  • On calls to action for downloadable assets like checklists, graphics and templates
